Wheelchair Safety

Wheelchair safety is paramount for users whether you are an elderly or someone with a disability, or in fact, both.

Foldable lightweight Wheelchairs such as the Dinkum Navigator® and the EagleHD® are a wonderful invention but also require a person to be mindful as thses types of wheelchairs are heavier than manual wheelchairs.

I will be covering the basics in order to drive when you first get your wheelchair.

When in a stationary situation of your foldable motorised wheelchair it is advised to;

  • Turn your wheelchair off so as to not accidently knock the joystick and catch you unaware.
  • Ensure that you have enough space to rotate and reverse; make your life easy and prepare.

     PS. To optimise your meal time experience when at a table, you can raise both your armrests so you can get nearer and under the table.

Mounting & Dismounting a lightweight motorized wheelchair

Traditionally, people think that they have to always forward mount or, sit down from the front of the wheelchair but using a state of the art wheelchair such as the Dinkum Navigator® and the EagleHD® you have two options.

The First: To mount safely, simply raise the footrest flush to the chair, walk flush to the front and sit. after doing this all one has to do is push the footrest down by either bending or using their feet.

The Second: I prefer this one myself when I an demonstrating and that is to side mount.

My opinion is that I am used to side mounting when I am sitting at a dining table so I adopt the same with an electric wheelchair. This can be achieved by simpley raising the preferred armrest, sitting then swivel to front.

Driving Up Hill

When approaching a hill it is best to keep driving and not stop. The reason for this is that it takes more juice from the battery if you keep stopping and starting.

As you approach the hill, if possible, lean forward with your back as straight as possible. This not only promotes a more comfortable up hill drive but, helps with cetren of gravity and the overall balance of your folding power wheelchair.

Turning On a Hill

We all know that sometimes this may happen. If this is the case for you what I would recommend is that you read and study your positioning before you make the turn.

When I have demonstrated this type of pass, I generally go up the hill then depending on the my left or right orientation for reversing, I park up.

In my case, I prefer to reverse to my right on a hill as it makes me feel more in control and confident.

okay, so imagine I am now parked to the left side of the pavement so to turn around safely, I will reverse slightly straght and then and turn in a  sweeping U shape until my power wheelchair is facing down hill.

This is the easiest and safest way I have found so if you live on a hill or a hilly area, have a go at it.

PS. It is advisable to never quickly put your joystick into reverse and any time, even on flat surfaces when driving. always let the chair stop, then do the manoeuvre, stop, then go.
